About the Creator
The Bilingual Complexity Approach Flashcards were
created by Keila Gutiérrez who is an expert bilingual
(Spanish-English), ASHA-certified speech-language
pathologist who specializes in speech sound disorders and
the implementation of the complexity approach in bilingual
children. She is the founder of Desert Lily Bilingual Speech
Therapy Clinic in the Tucson, Arizona area. Keila is
passionate about empowering speech-language
pathologists to deliver effective, evidence-based care
tailored to diverse linguistic and cultural populations.

Approach
The Complexity Approach is a direct phonological
intervention to remediate moderate to severe speech
sound disorders in children. This intervention approach is
appropriate for functional speech-sound disorders,
meaning that a child’s speech sound disorder cannot be
attributed to oral structure or musculature. It is also
appropriate for children who do not present with delays
beyond phonology
(Gierut, 2007).
When working with culturally diverse children, it's
important to consider their language backgrounds and
dialects which is why this particular product was carefully
adapted to include English and Spanish words that contain
2 element clusters shared across both languages.
